The rules governing audits of solicitors’ client accounts were changed to an "outcomes-focussed" approach in 2011.The Principles set out by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) apply to all aspects of practice, including the handling of client money.

These require solicitors to - protect client money and assets, act with integrity, behave in a way that maintains the trust the public places in you and in the provision of legal services, comply with your legal and regulatory obligations and run your business or carry out your role in the business effectively.

If at any time during an accounting period, a solicitor has held or received client money, or operated a client's own account as signatory, they must deliver to the SRA an accountant's report for that accounting period within six months of the end of the accounting period. This duty extends to the directors of a company, or the members of an LLP, which is subject to this rule. The rules for auditing client accounts and the format of the report are detailed and stringent. A checklist to the approved SRA format must also be completed. Motor Industry

The rules and regulations for motor dealerships can be confusing, whether it is the Marginal Scheme for second hand goods or the Qualifying Scheme for VAT on new cars, we are able to assist you in the implementation and upkeep of systems to ensure that calculating VAT within the motor trade is as simple as possible. Both of these schemes are subject to rigorous internal controls with which we can assist.

There are many rules and regulations that form part of the motor trade, one notably under the Second Hand Goods Scheme is that you are required to hold a stock book. This should detail what, where, when and the price you purchased the motor for and then the subsequent sale details of the vehicles with the profit you had made on said motor.

Auto Enrolment

You may have received a letter from The Pensions Regulator regarding auto enrolment for your business. Whether you have one employee or 1,000 employees, auto enrolment places significant responsibilities on an employer. Employers will need to enrol many of their employees into a work based pension scheme and pay some pension contributions.

Your responsibility as an employer is to have an appropriate pension scheme. We cannot provide advice to you as this is the province of an Independent Financial Adviser or pension consultant. But we can provide you with details of pension schemes which have been established to cater for small or medium sized business to suit your needs.

Ideally you should choose an appropriate pension scheme provider and apply to that scheme 6 months before the staging date. We can help you along the way with setting up the scheme once you have decided the route to go down, process the payroll for you and ensure that all taxes and liabilities are noted to you on time and to make sure you are fully aware of your responsibilities as an employer.
